In 1997, Governor-General Sir William Deane issued a proclamation formally declaring 11 November to be Remembrance Day, urging all Australians to observe one minute silence at 11.00am on 11 November each year, to remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts. Tomorrow at 11.00am, our school community will pause to remember. We are disappointed that we cannot gather this year to mark Remembrance Day in our usual way.

A popular poem from World War I, In Flanders Fields, was written by Canadian John McCrae who, in 1915, was inspired by the sight of poppies on the Ypres battlefield. He was the first person to describe the poppy as a flower of remembrance.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Thank you for keeping your children home when they are sick. We have not had to contact too many parents this week to collect sick children. We do understand that children can develop unwell symptoms as the day progresses. With COVID-19 present in many schools, we need to do everything we can keep our students and staff well.
